JK:  I was born in the beautiful tourist town of Malang, in East Java, the former Dutch East Indies, prior to the Japanese invasion. After struggle for independence, the country became known as Indonesia and the Dutch were expelled.

Zie ook de laatste nieuwsbrief :      Many years ago in grade school (USA) a teacher asked us to introduce ourselves to the class and give a little biography.  After class was over I was walking out when someone tapped my shoulder.  I turned around and it was one of my classmates.  She had bright red hair.  She told me that her grandmother was born and raised in the Dutch East Indies.  I almost fell over flat on the floor.  No one ever knew what I was talking about – even the teachers –  and this one girl with the bright red hair did.  Many of us have a difficult time explaining to others what the Dutch East Indies means and how we are connected.  Why ?  They simply do not know.
