@Bungtolol (I hesitate to use this word to address you) but thank you for your compliment which I very much appreciate. However, there are so many Indos like me who are very proud of who they are and want the entire world to know who we are as a people. We all do what we can, you included Bungtolol, to keep our history and our culture alive. I am grateful to all who contribute in time, talent, blood, sweat & tears and who have been an example for me. I want to thank Boeroeng for producing Indisch4Ever, and Arthur Olive, as well, for starting this exchange and for having attended one of our kumpulans…when you lived in CA? We have a great team at The Indo Project of dedicated and truly committed people who continue to make the organization live up to its mission and thrive on Indo Pride! Together, we will make the world take notice of us Indos—Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. – Helen Keller

@Arthur Olive, The Indo Project is an all volunteer organization, meaning that at events all the hard work is done by volunteers for free, including the cooking. In the USA, the situation is not like in NL where there are many active groups, people and organizations that know how to cook Indo and make cooking a priority. Thus, we are totally depended on the people who volunteer to cook Indo food and there are less and less of them. And, yes, sometimes, we have to resort and obtain fried rice or lo mein from a Chinese restaurant, although this has not been the case at all kumpulans. At our last kumpulan, before Covid, we had a large assortment of Indo food cooked by wonderful women who were kind enough to take time to cook. What you have to remember is the most important role of these kumpulans. These kumpulans accomplish in bringing the Indo community together in a land where there are not many Indos left and not many groups celebrating Indos. These kumpulans allow us Indos to take pride in our heritage and history and set an example for the younger generations. IF, the only purpose is to come to these kumpulans to eat Indo food, I would suggest finding an Indonesian restaurant in your neighborhood. By the way, should you ever want to join us and want to cook, we would love to welcome you to our kumpulans!

      Hi Mrs. Kluge McMullen

My wife and I enjoyed the kumpulan in Florida even without Indonesian food.
I did not come for the food but for the feeling of belonging and that was definitely satisfied.
Bringing a “rantang” with food if you have to fly 3000 miles is not practical for me.
I wonder if it would be possible to have a potluck and require those who don’t to give a contribution that goes towards the food.
We sometimes go to an Italian kumpulan because I convinced them that my mother’s family, Lucardie, came from Italy. Most of these Italian Americans don’t speak Italian and never visited Italy but their Italian food is a very important part of the comradery. You are what you eat as the comedian Flip Wilson used to say.
