Indos are thriving worldwide. Sometimes, however, Indos in California may not feel that sense of communal belonging or historical presence, and yet we truly are an authentic community. To this point, Dutch freelance journalist Inge Oosterhoff, has published a wonderful new long form article in the Dutch newspaper, De Groene Amsterdammer, which excavates the long history of Indos in the U.S. (primarily California) stretching all the way back to the 1950s.

Since Creutz passed RIP ,not much going on, miss him and the little yellow “de Indo” and his get togethers so much…. Rene used to visit with my parents in LA to chit chat ngobrol. The greatest generation and now mine are sadly probably the last of the Mohicans like he used to say, who actually were born in NIndie… sorry to say but of those younger not many know their history or the languages, besides Calif and all of America is also so different from what it once was … we had so much fun and opportunities… all this next generation does is work like slaves to keep their heads above water…

Chen, de vrouw van Rene Creutzburg, is nog voor zijn overlijden terug gegaan naar Surabaja waar haar dochter woont. Chen had daar ook een foto winkel vroeger.
Wie weet of zij AOW van Rene heeft gekregen? Want daar had hij het nog over met mij vlak voor zij heengaan.

Hallo, Ik weet niet veel over AOW.. ja ik wist wel dat Chen familie heeft in Surabaya, woont ze nu daar ? Haar kokkerellen waren fantastisch… betoel… ik hoop maar dat zij at least wat krijgt uit NL… wat is er met zijn mooie Indo bibliotheek on the 2nd Floor geworden ? “Ik weet niet veel over AOW”
Met AOW bedoel ik de Amerikaanse Social Security.
Rene kreeg over de jaren zoveel boeken toegestuurd dat hij de laatse jaren alles van wat hij al had weggaf. Hij was bang dat zijn tweede verdieping in elkaar zou storten vanwege het gewicht.
Zijn Indo bibliotheek is overgedragen aan de University of California at Berkeley. Ze hebben daar een Dutch studies, groot genoeg om de aandacht van koningin Maxima te hebben getrokken. Zij is daar dan ook geweest.
Rene is ‘de Indo’ begonnen op aanrading van Tjalie Robinson waar hij veel respect voor had.
