El Atabal

There was no way of going back; Indonesia as we had known it did not exist anymore. So those people started thinking of other possibilities. Many of them went to California, Hawaii, Australia.  There was a small group who thought of the South of Spain.
In 1962 they bought 53 hectares of land for 10 million pesetas (about €60,000) called El Atabal.
The mayor, Francisco Garcia Grana, laid the first stone on 1 April.
The whole land was divided into 500 plots, connected by small winding roads which they called calle Sumatra, calle Java, calle Padang, calle Bogor, plaza Reina Juliana, and so on

I have never heard about this enclave, but what a great idea. If I had not received a job offer from South California, I still would have left the Netherlands. Main choice was east of Italy and then Spain.
